FAQs

  • A competency-based interview is an interview that uses questions which aim to find out how you have used specific skills in your previous experience and how you approach problems, tasks and challenges. Also called behavioural or situational questions

  • The STARR format is a great way to structure answers to a competency-based question ensuring you provide all the detail that is needed.

S - Situation, Set the scene

T - Task, What were your role and responsibilities in this example

A - Actions, What did you do

R - Results, What was the outcome of your actions

R- Reflect, summarise what you learnt from the situation and how it aligns with the question that was asked.

  • When we think about examples we can quite often jump straight to examples at work but this isn't always the case. Perhaps there is a time during education or in your personal life when you have tackled a challenge that relates to this question.

  • Interviews can be stressful and they favour extraverts. If you find yourself drawering a blank, getting tunnel vision or if your nerves are getting the better of you then just let the panelists know and we can help. We can take a 5 min break, move on to another question and cirlce back or even give you the option to submit your answer in writing after the interview.

  • Yes, The Talent team will provide you the names and job titles of the interview panelists as well as a list of competencies they will be assessing you on.
